About:

Fifth-graders at Daly Elementary School prove that kindness can come in all shapes and sizes, including a paper bag. This year, students and student athletes launched a Kindness Bags initiative, collecting donations of various items such as hats, socks, gloves, as well as toothpaste and other personal hygiene products that they gathered into recyclable paper bags. Their project will be donated to the Interfaith Nutrition Network, an organization that assists many of Long Island’s homeless population.

Students spearheaded the effort by creating flyers to alert the entire school community of their campaign. They then visited classrooms throughout the school to seek donations, where they were met with an outpouring of support from other Daly students and their families. Once all of the items were collected, fifth-graders worked in assembly line fashion to put together the Kindness Bags and decorated them with festive wishes in time to deliver to the INN before the holidays. In total, 66 Kindness Bags and an additional 50 travel-size bags were donated.

“Many thanks to our fifth-graders and everyone who contributed to help make this holiday season a little warmer and brighter for others who are less fortunate” said Daly Principal Sheri Suzzan. “We are very proud of our students!”

“Once again a Port school community has shown its character, generosity and willingness to work together for the benefit of someone else” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Mooney. “This is one of the most valuable lessons we can teach our children: they are never too young to give back to their community and help people. I applaud Daly School for demonstrating that every gesture of kindness adds up to make a huge difference.”
